After the successful ARRI X Ceramic 250, ARRI Lighting developed a Fresnel style Ceramic fixture, which has been equally well received. Modeled after the ARRI 2000 tungsten Fresnel, the Studio Ceramic 250 evolved into an optimized and balanced lamphead. Just like the "other" black magic, our own BLACK MAGIC heavy-duty light stand was developed to solve the daily problems that are too tricky for run-of-the-mill solutions... in our case, how to lift 200kg to a height of 6 metres. It combines a unique design with the most innovative technical solutions that have been applied to the lifting system, the foldable base, the safety devices, and the surface treatments.

The BLACK MAGIC column is composed of five aluminium tubes. These black anodized tubes have a special design that create the anti-rotation feature. The Swift Lift mechanism is made up of three fork lift chains that permit smooth, continuous extension of the 4 rises which can be raised to any custom height.  Thanks to the winch concept, the mono-operation cranking is very smooth during climbing and descent.The self locking device will automatically stop the column from falling, if at any moment the operator lets go.The dedicated heat treatment on the internal components is used to achieve the highest mechanical performance and guarantee the longest working life.

Safety is a priority for BLACK MAGIC. It contains four safety devices to control all the operations and protect the operator. There are two locking teeth applied to the main cog wheels and two automatic clutches to control and keep the load stable during descent.  The top attachment is the standard 28mm (1 1/8 in) made from machined aluminium. It is also possible to use wind bracing thanks to the rings positioned at the end of the last rise.  BLACK MAGIC's base is composed of four steel legs. In one smooth operation it can be opened and closed. No more dismounting components or multi-operations to set up the base. The main body of each leg is composed of 3 mm steel supporting your needs in even the most extreme situations

QUALITY and RELIABILITY TESTS:

Dynamic tests:

• as simulation of working life of the product with 2000 complete extensions of the column with 500kg on the top.

Static tests such as:

• the traction test on the chains and pinions applying 650kg (simulated load)

• the +6° inclination test, to obtain the TUV certification and simulate the use of the product with the max load (200kg, 440 lbs) at 6m height and 6° floor inclination.

• 100 hours of salt spray test in order to simulate the reaction of the finishing with application in adverse environment.

All the structural components that are crucial for the safety or have to support high stress are engineered using the FEM analysis. The FEM (Finite Element Method) permits simulation of external forces in different application and to calculate the resulting stress on the component. Using this tool Manfrotto can optimize the design of the product obtaining the highest performance combined with the lowest weight.

MAINTENANCE:

BLACK MAGIC was developed to reduce the maintenance as much as possible.

Every collar has an inspection window to control the status of the internal components. Using the same window it is also possible to lubricate the mechanism.

BLACK MAGIC is assembled using bolts in order to make ordinary maintenance and component replacement easier and quicker.

Chimera has designed a new light that is both innovative and versatile. The Triolet^TM is pronounced Tree-O-Lay, being named for a mountain in the French Alps.

Chimera Triolet^TM can use 3 different lamp styles for the utmost in versatility. The Triolet accepts the popular 2-pin lamps up to 650 Watts (in its protective glass dome) using the new Chimera designed 2-pin adapter. With Mogul and medium base household bulbs, we recommend not using lamps over 1000 Watts. Mogul lamps fit direct into the fixture and medium base household bulbs use the screw-in adapter (included). The Triolet also comes standard with its own #9890 Quick Release Speed Ring.

The Chimera Triolet emits a broad, omni-directional light that is compatible with Lightbanks, Lanterns, Octabanks, or even without a modifier for a bare-bulb light effect.

The Avenger CrossPole is a heavy-duty telescopic pole designed to span gaps from 80cm (2.7ft) up to 6 meters (19.7ft) and support up to 75kg (165lb) of lighting equipment and grip gear at any height from the ground.

A protective plate at each end allows the pole to expand between upright walls¹⁾ without damaging them and without the use of nails, screws or glue. Safety and security features make it ideal even for the kind of heavy loads that film lighting demands.

• EXPANDER: The first of the two end plates is the expander. It has a pre-loading index which can be pre-set to the distance between the two walls so that the CrossPole's tension can be fine-tuned with minimum adjustment: designed to guarantee the maximum safety and resistance for the CrossPole's working life.

• TUBES: The X400KIT is supplied with six tubes in special aluminum to cover any distance between two walls from 80cm (2.7ft) up to 4 meters (13.1ft). The 3m (9.8ft) tubes used to bridge 6m (19.7ft) spans are available as an accessory - code X406.

• STATIC PLATE: The wall plates have a special component that pivots to allow the tubes to bend and guarantees the maximum grip with your wall. Provided with levelling bubble and assembled with bolts (no rivets).

• LOCKING COLLAR: Dedicated component that prevents the telescopic tube from sliding under load. Provided with aluminum handle grips and rubber covers.

Inspired by a working cinematographer Rich Underwood and refined by Chimera's engineers, the New CHIMERA Birdcage^TM Lantern light has emerged as an unique addition to the CHIMERA family of Lightbanks. This new innovative  design offers flexible use - hang it, stand it up, lay it down, put it on a stand with the new CHIMERA #3860 stand adapter.

The light can be shaped with the adjustable black/silver skirt, adding a glow where you desire a small to moderate area of soft accent light. P56 lighting, the sister branch of K5600 Inc., has released the Alpha 18 18K Fresnel HMI. It weighs 125 pounds in open-eye mode (good for the new Condor rules) and has a small, shallow profile of 23" with a standard 24" Fresnel or ceramic glass.  The core of this innovation is a patent-pending, custom-made reflector molded out of quartz composite material, allowing the lamp to be much closer to the reflector and therefore reducing the physical size of the Alpha 18K by a third (compared to the traditional 18Ks on the market).

A computer-designed extrusion/vent system is precisely angled for maximum cooling efficiency, and with a specially engineered back door (Turbine style), the Alpha 18 will stay cool in any critical position. A double-suspension system (one to the lamp heat sinks and one to the chassis support) makes the Alpha 18 lamp less fragile to rough handling that occurs during location transportation.

The Alpha 18K allows the user to switch from the soft Fresnel look to a hard-shadow Open Eye by interchanging lenses instantly from the front of the fixture with the pull of a knob.

The VistaBeam 600 and VistaBeam 300 are the newest large area studio soft lighting fixtures from Kino Flo®, the leading maker of professional fluorescent lighting systems for feature film and television production, TV broadcast, and digital video. 

The VistaBeam (the world’s brightest full-spectrum soft light) was introduced as a rental item on a limited basis in 2005 for motion picture and television production.

The special design of the VistaBeam makes it versatile enough to use on a stand as a key or fill source, or mounted facing downward to lay down a smooth, even beam of soft light similar to a conventional tungsten area light, such as a 6,000 Watt “space” light with a diffusing silk skirt. However, unlike a hot light, the VistaBeam 600 (120VAC) operates coolly, and pulls only 10 amps of power (compared to 50 amps for tungsten). The VistaBeam can operate either daylight, or tungsten balanced lamps, or both at the same time.

Both the VistaBeam 600 (six lamps) and the VistaBeam 300 (three lamps) have a DMX control system, high output/standard output switching, individual lamp control, instant-on, dead quiet/flicker-free ballast performance, remote operation, reflector, louver, gel frame, center mount/yoke mount option, and stackable design. In addition, as accessories, the fixtures can be operated remotely via a hand held remote control and/or a SCR dimming/switching module.

Photometrics: at a distance of 10 feet, the VistaBeam 600 delivers more than 130 foot candles* of light using Kino Flo True Match® color-balanced lamps (CRI 95); using standard low color rendering lamps the light output at 10 feet is closer to 190 foot candles. Measured in LUX: At 2.5 meters the light output is approximately 2078 LUX using True Match daylight or tungsten-balanced tubes; or about 3000 LUX using low color rendering tubes.

*All Kino Flo photometrics are measured in a blackout studio using a flat surface light meter. Light is measured at center beam.
